COMPANY FOUNDERS: Cameron Farah & Tim Laughlin both of whom were former Consumers Carclub (later known as JD Power Clubs) executives.

WHY WE STARTED THIS BUSINESS: Prior to the Internet, auto buying was a realm where there was little information available for consumers to make an educated decision on the best car to meet their needs. We had to rely on word-of-mouth, a handful of publications, and the word of the dealer. With the advent of the Internet, many expected the auto buying experience would be revolutionized: No longer would we need to walk into a car dealership; we would simply buy our cars online. This presumption came crashing down on many, many Internet companies. Instead, the Internet has become primarily a place where car buying information can be gathered. But oftentimes, the information is very imprecise in helping us determine the price we actually should expect to pay for the specific car we want. We may get price ranges, but no one is able to put the entire auto pricing formula together in one complete package. And the advent of the Internet did nothing to change the actual experience of buying a car. In fact, in some ways, the Internet has made the process of car buying more intrusive. With many Web sites offering “get a price quote” for a vehicle, we now are asked to submit our phone number, address, and e-mail address to dealers so we can be contacted at home or work.
